HSDPA and EV-DO transmit via cell towers, using a different frequency than voice calls. Unlimited data plans usually run $60-80 per month.
EVDO
- Qualcomm developed in 1999
- next step in the evolution of CDMA
- widely used overseas
- now being implemented in the United States
- usually 300-512 Kbps, but can get up to 2 Mbps in the right areas (10 times faster than dial-up, but still not up to DSL’s 2.4 Mbps)
- Verizon (180+ major metro areas) and Sprint
HSDPA
- based on GSM (used for cell phones throughout the world)
- connects to GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, and HSDPA
- better than EVDO, but not as widely deployed
- AT&T in the U.S. (165+ major metro areas) and Vodaphone or Vodaphone partner networks in 120 countries
